MTN, Gates Foundation Launch $25m AI Maternal Health Platform

Image
The MTN Group Foundation and the Gates Foundation have unveiled a joint $25 million AI Maternal Health initiative. Formally launched on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the four-year program titled the Nigeria Maternal Health Multiplier aims to leverage artificial intelligence, mobile technology, and telecommunications infrastructure to transform maternal healthcare delivery across Nigeria.    Running from 2026 through 2030, the $25 million commitment combines direct funding and in-kind resources from both organizations. By the end of the four-year deployment, the platform is projected to reach at least 500,000 pregnant women, equip 5,000 frontline healthcare workers with real-time digital clinical tools, and upgrade telecom infrastructure for 500 primary health centers.    A Response to a Global Crisis The coalition targets Nigeria due to its disproportionate burden in global health statistics. According to data from t...

Humanoid Robot Sales Reach 7000 As Global Industry Bets On Rapid Growth

Image
Global sales of humanoid robots reached approximately 7,000 units last year, according to new data released today by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). The figure provides one of the first official industry-wide benchmarks for a rapidly developing sector that continues to draw billions of dollars in venture capital and corporate investment despite its currently modest commercial scale.    The Frankfurt-based organization, which has tracked global automation statistics for three decades, initiated dedicated tracking for humanoid systems following a surge in industrial interest, pilot deployments, and high-profile technical demonstrations worldwide.    Under the IFR’s criteria, a machine is classified as a humanoid if it features a human-like form factor and operates autonomously within environments engineered for people. The federation's taxonomy explicitly notes that legs are not a mandatory prerequisite, though human-like manipulation capabili...

Nigeria records first tele-robotic surgery in West Africa

Image
Nigerian healthcare professionals have successfully performed the West African sub-region’s first-ever tele-robotic surgery.    The pioneer operation, a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy performed to extract a cancerous kidney tumor, was executed on a patient lying in an operating theater in Abuja. Meanwhile, the lead surgeon controlled the robotic instruments in real time from a master console in Mowe, Ogun State, roughly 500 kilometers away.    The historic procedure was carried out through a trilateral partnership involving Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) in Ogun State, medical technology provider RoboMed Global, and Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja.    The operation utilized the advanced Toumai robotic surgical console situated at Redeemer’s Health Village. Operating the master unit was Professor Obi Ekwenna-Davis, a US-based Professor of Urology and Transplantation and Co-Founder of RoboMed Global.    Hundreds of kilometers away a...

FG Adopts New System To Cut Waste In Healthcare Spending

Image
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially adopted Health Technology Assessment (HTA) as a national framework to guide healthcare coverage and spending. The initiative was formally flagged off in Abuja during the inauguration of the HTA Steering Committee. The move represents a structural pivot toward evidence-based healthcare financing as the country seeks to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) while protecting citizens from catastrophic medical expenses. A Systematic Shift Toward "Strategic Purchasing " Under the leadership of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, HTA introduces a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the clinical effectiveness, economic value, safety, and equity impact of medical interventions before they are funded or integrated into national benefit packages. Speaking at the launch, the  Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pat...

172 LGAs Account For 55% Of Nigeria’s Maternal Deaths — FG

Image
The Federal Government has revealed that just 172 of the nation’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) account for 55 percent of all maternal deaths nationwide.  The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, made the announcement in Abuja during the official national flag-off of direct incentives intended to boost the uptake of maternal and newborn healthcare services. The geographic concentration means that nearly six out of every ten maternal fatalities occur across roughly 20 percent of the country’s administrative councils, spanning 33 states.   The disproportionate death toll in these focal LGAs forms the baseline for the Federal Government’s flagship Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII). Launched to move beyond blanket, nationwide interventions, MAMII strategically deploys resources, clinical equipment, and targeted subsidies directly to high-risk zones.   Targeted Interventions and Incentive...

Health officials turn to mobile-phone data to track Ebola spread in Congo

Image
Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have begun leveraging anonymized mobile-phone mobility data to track and predict the virus's spread. The unprecedented strategy comes as the country battles its 17th Ebola outbreak. Caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain for which there are currently no fully approved vaccines or specialized treatments the epidemic has spiraled rapidly across six provinces since being officially declared in mid-May. According to the latest figures from the Congolese Ministry of Health, confirmed cases have surpassed 6,250, with the death toll climbing above 3,000. Traditional contact tracing and risk assessments have struggled to keep pace. Active conflict in eastern DRC, widespread displacement, attacks on field workers, and mobile worker populations such as miners continuously on the move have severely hampered boots-on-the-ground epidemiological tracking. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports indicate that only 15...

Google Launches Gemini 3.7 Flash With Lower Pricing for Coding, AI Agents

Image
Google officially unveiled Gemini 3.7 Flash. The new mid-tier AI model brings significant upgrades to software engineering, web design, and agentic workflows arriving alongside an aggressive temporary price cut designed to undercut rivals in the rapidly accelerating market for autonomous software agents. The announcement comes just three weeks after the release of Gemini 3.6 Flash. While tech updates are increasingly frequent, Google’s latest release shifts away from simply making models faster. Instead, Gemini 3.7 Flash focuses on "thinking more diligently," giving autonomous systems the operational stamina needed to plan multi-step execution paths, recover from bugs, and handle complex tools without human hand-holding. An Architectural Pivot: Planning Over Pure Speed For the past year, the industry trend for "Flash" or light-tier AI models revolved around speed and token minimization. Developers often found that while these models answered simple prompts inst...

WHO Urges Integration, Innovation To End HIV, Hepatitis, STIs By 2030

Image
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an urgent call for global health leaders, governments, and donor agencies to embrace structural integration, scientific innovation, and community leadership to meet the global goal of eliminating HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by 2030. The appeal coincided with the release of a milestone progress assessment report evaluating the implementation of the Global Health Sector Strategies for HIV, viral hepatitis, and STIs from 2022 to 2030. Unveiled during the 26th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2026) and aligned with World Hepatitis Day observed under the theme “Hepatitis: Let's break it down”the report reveals a dual reality: remarkable progress driven by scientific breakthroughs, alongside dangerous vulnerabilities caused by global funding cuts, health inequalities, and humanitarian crises. Unprecedented Gains Against HIV, but Gaps Remain The WHO report highlights major advances in expanding life-...
